Van Leasing with Insurance

Insurance is one of the questions we hear most about van leasing. The honest answer is that you arrange it yourself. Here is what that means, and what to ask for when you get quotes.

Insurance is not included

Our monthly rentals do not include insurance. You arrange your own cover, and the funder normally requires it to be in place before the van is delivered. We are not an insurance broker and we do not recommend providers, so get quotes from a broker or a comparison site.

Comprehensive or third party?

Third party only covers damage you cause to other people and their property. Comprehensive also covers damage to your own van. Because the funder owns the van, lease agreements typically require comprehensive cover, so check your agreement before you buy a policy. Cover that is cheap but leaves you short of what the agreement requires can put you in breach of it.

Getting the right cover

Tell the insurer the van is used for business, who will drive it, and what it carries. Cover for tools and goods in transit is often separate, so ask about it. If you have two or more vans, a fleet policy may be simpler than separate ones, and a broker can advise.

Ask also about gap insurance. If a van is written off or stolen, the insurer normally pays its market value, which can be less than what you still owe the funder. Gap insurance is designed to cover that shortfall, and your broker can tell you whether it suits your lease.

Frequently asked questions

+Is insurance included in van leasing?

No. Our monthly rentals do not include insurance. You arrange your own cover, and it normally has to be in place before the van is delivered.

+What insurance do I need for a leased van?

Lease agreements typically require comprehensive cover, and the funder is usually noted on the policy. Check your agreement for the exact requirements, and tell your insurer the van is used for business.

+Can I use my existing business insurance on a leased van?

Possibly. It depends whether your policy covers leased or hired vehicles, and your insurer will need to add the van. The funder's requirements must also be met. Ask your insurer or broker before delivery.

+What is gap insurance on a van lease?

If a leased van is written off or stolen, the insurer normally pays its market value, which can be less than the amount you owe the funder. Gap insurance covers that difference. Ask a broker whether you need it.
