Electric Van Leasing

Electric vans are now a practical choice for many UK businesses, and leasing is a low-risk way to try one. Our electric leasing page covers electric cars as well. Here is what van operators should know.

Benefits for businesses

  • No fuel costs. Electricity is generally cheaper per mile than diesel, especially if you charge at your depot overnight.
  • VAT reclaim. If your business is VAT registered, VAT on the rentals can usually be reclaimed in full where the van is used for business only. Check with your accountant.
  • Low-emission zone access. Electric vans are exempt from ULEZ charges and are well placed for zero-emission zones as they spread. Check the rules for the areas you work in.
  • Quieter and smoother. Drivers often prefer them, and early-morning deliveries are less disruptive.

What about range?

Range is the question we hear most. Look at your typical day, not your longest day. If your vans do a set round and return to base, a modern electric van will often cover it with miles to spare. Real-world range falls in cold weather and with a heavy load, so allow a margin. If you regularly cover long distances without a chance to charge, a diesel van may still suit you better.

Charging at your depot

Most businesses charge at their base. A dedicated charge point on your premises lets vans fill up overnight when electricity is typically cheaper. Drivers who take vans home may be able to charge at home, so check how that cost would be handled. Public charging is available for top-ups.

Incentives

Tax treatment and government support for electric vans change from time to time. Check the latest guidance on GOV.UK and HMRC, or ask your accountant, before you commit.
