Can I lease a van for my limited company?

A white van outside a trade unit, showing can i lease a van for my limited company in practice.

Yes. A limited company can lease a van on business contract hire, with the company named as the hirer. The finance company will assess the company, and sometimes its directors, before deciding. Whether a deal is offered depends on their checks, not on the broker.

The detail

Business contract hire is a rental agreement. The company pays to use the van for a fixed term and agreed mileage, then hands it back. It never owns the van. This is why it suits many limited companies: the van is not bought outright, and the company does not take on the risk of resale value.

Who signs. The company is the hirer, so a director signs on its behalf. Some finance companies also ask for personal backing from one or more directors. This is more common with newer or smaller companies. Personal backing means a director could be responsible if the company cannot pay, so read it carefully before agreeing.

What the finance company looks at. Each one has its own criteria, but typically they consider:

  • how long the company has been trading
  • its filed accounts and general financial position
  • the company's credit file, and sometimes the directors' credit files
  • whether the company is registered at a real trading address

What you may be asked for. Be ready with the company name and registration number, the trading address, director details, and recent bank statements or accounts. Newer companies without filed accounts may be asked for more evidence.

Tax and VAT. How VAT and tax apply depends on whether the company is VAT registered, how the van is used, and the type of agreement. We can't give tax advice, so check with your accountant before you sign.

Credit broker, not lender. Swiss Vans Ltd is a credit broker, not a lender. We compare options from finance providers and pass your enquiry to them. The decision on any application belongs to the finance provider, and nothing is guaranteed in advance.

Other business types. Sole traders, partnerships and LLPs can also enquire about contract hire. The checks differ slightly because the legal structure is different.

A worked example

Take a hypothetical limited company: a small electrical contractor with two directors. It wants a panel van for a new employee, and it would rather not tie up cash buying one.

  1. The company decides on the type of van, the contract length and the annual mileage it expects. These choices shape the monthly cost, so an honest mileage estimate matters.
  2. It enquires through a broker, giving the company details and, if asked, supporting documents such as recent accounts.
  3. The broker approaches finance providers whose criteria might suit the company. Each provider runs its own checks.
  4. If a provider offers terms, the company reviews them. This includes the mileage limit, any charges for damage beyond fair wear and tear, and whether personal backing from a director is requested.
  5. If the company accepts, a director signs for the company. The van is ordered and delivered. At the end of the term the company returns it, or discusses what to do next.

If a provider declines, another may take a different view, but that is never certain.

Questions people ask

Do I need to be VAT registered to lease a van for my company?

No. VAT registration is not a requirement for enquiring, though it affects how VAT is treated on the rental. Your accountant can advise on your position.

Will a director have to give personal backing?

Not always. It depends on the finance provider and on factors such as the company's age and financial history. If one is requested, you will see it in the paperwork before you commit.

Can a newly formed limited company lease a van?

It may be possible, but providers often want more supporting information from newer companies, and some may decline. Each provider decides for itself.

Does leasing a van affect my personal credit file?

The main assessment is of the company. If personal backing is requested, or the provider checks directors' files, your personal credit file may be involved. Ask what checks will be run before you apply.
